Lt General Madhuri Kanitkar - Motivation for all women

Major General Madhuri Kanitkar on Saturday was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general -- becoming the third woman officer in the Indian Army and first woman paediatrician to achieve the second-highest post in the force. Madhuri Kanitkar has served in the Indian military for 37 years. Major General Madhuri Kanitkar, the former dean of Armed Forces Medical College Pune, has been posted to Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff under the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

Major General Madhuri Kanitkar and her husband Rajiv, who is also a lieutenant general, will be the first couple in the armed forces to achieve the rank.

An alumnus of AFMC78 batch Dr Madhuri Kanitkar holds many FIRSTS in the history of Indian Army. Though she never intended to be an army doctor until 12th. It was only in 12th class that she came across AFMC and decided to give it a try. Women entry in Indian Army is still subject of debate in modern times. When Dr Kanitkar entered Army nearly 4 decades back and conquered it. She holds many records and many firsts in history.

She is recently been elevated to the rank of Lieutenant General. She becomes 1st pediatrician to be elevated to the ranks of Lt General which is the highest rank for army doctors. Her husband Lt General Rajiv had been an Indian Army Lt General too and it also creates history in India where both the spouses have been lt Generals in Indian Army, a very unique accomplishment. Close on the heels of the Supreme Court ruling for women officers who have been fighting for an equal footing with men in the armed forces, Major General Madhuri Kanitkar was elevated to the rank of Lieutenant-General on Saturday. Lt Gen Kanitkar took charge as Deputy Chief, Integrated Defence Staff (DCIDS), Medical (under the Chief of Defence Staff) in New Delhi. Lt Gen Punita Arora was the first woman in the country to don the second-highest rank of Lieutenant General in the armed forces. Padmavathy Bandopadhyay is the first woman Air Marshal of the Indian Air Force and the second woman in the armed forces to be promoted to the three-star rank.

After completing more than two years as dean of AFMC in Pune, Kanitkar had last year taken the responsibility as Major General Medical, Udhampur. The Northern Command is an operational command of the Indian Army engaged in counterinsurgency and counterterrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

The CDS is a post that acts as a single point advisor to the government of India who is in a position to advise on matters related to all the three services —Army, Navy and Air Force, thus making India’s armed forces integrated. “This organisation is fair, transparent, respected and safe for a woman where she is given opportunities to grow.
